Column: Leave Lance Armstrong alone

The man has retired from racing, can't we just leave Lance Armstrong alone.
It seems like every year we have to sit and read or watch on television the accusations that he used performance enhancing drugs.
And, year after year we find these allegations to be false.
Now comes word out of France that the director of the Tour de France has proof that Armstrong cheated.
What Armstrong did was cheat death. He won the world's biggest bike race seven times.
I'm sorry that he's an American.
Let it go!
Even if he did cheat, and I am by no way saying that it is okay to cheat, but even if he did, you didn't catch him at it when it really mattered.
Armstrong passed test after test, including those administered this year.
It sounds like sour grapes to me.
There should be no reason to believe these allegations, but I know people are out there just waiting to knock Armstrong off his pedestal.
I know the media would love to crush him after they built him up to be one of the greatest athletes of all time.
But here is the rub. You didn't catch him once. You lost. You have nothing to base your allegations on other than some French newspaper supposedly has factual proof that he failed drug tests in 1999.
This isn't murder we are talking about here. Shouldn't the statute of limitations on this case ran out by now?
If you have some proof that he failed a drug test this year then let's see it.
You never will because I believe that he has never cheated.
Has anyone taken a good look at this guy?
A strong wind ought to blow him off his bike.
Not exactly pumped up now is he?
Armstrong has put the face of cycling on the map and everyone involved in the sport ought to be thanking him instead of taking cheap shots at him.
There are very few professional athletes that I would want my daughter to look up to.
Most of them are too greedy, too selfish or of questionable character.
But Lance Armstrong is someone that I would more than be happy to have her emulate.
If anyone can produce some "real" proof my opinion may change.
But as of right now I am sticking with Lance as one of the greatest "people" of all-time as well as the world's greatest cyclist.
Viva la Lance!
