CASSOPOLIS - Cass County Sheriff Joseph M Underwood Jr is reporting that the Cass County Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol is investigating a boating crash that occurred on South East side of Donnell Lake in Penn Township.
A water craft pulling a tube with some juveniles was driving on the lake when it was being followed by a personal water craft. The personal water craft was being driven by a 33-year-old male from Mishawaka, Ind.
The driver of the personal water craft ran into the tube that was being pulled by the water craft in front of it.
Two juveniles were on the tube that was hit, resulting in one having minor injuries that were treated on scene and released.
The other juvenile sustained fatal injuries in the crash.
Alcohol might be a factor in the crash and the crash remains under investigation at this time. The Cass County Sheriff's Office Road Patrol, Penn Township Fire Department, Air Care, and Life Care Ambulance were all on scene assisting with the crash. The names of the crash are being withheld at this time.
Underwood also reports his office investigated a single-engine aircraft accident that occurred in a corn field in Marcellus Township, near the intersection of Sheldon Creek Road and Van Buren Street.
At approximately 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, a witness reported hearing the engine missing, then stop running.
The plane banked into a turn, heading back west, then disappeared into a corn field. Pilot William Yamokoski, 47, of St. Joseph, was found uninjured.
Yamokoski told deputies he was attempting to land in a bean field after the engine failed, but was unable to make it.
After an investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the plane was removed from the field and will be transported back to the Benton Harbor airport.
