Senate committee increases Amtrak funding

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Tuesday the Senate Appropriations Committee voted to increase Amtrak's annual appropriation to $1.45 billion, roughly what the US Department of Transportation's Inspector General said is required to operate the existing system.
Making the service attractive to a large number of people requires fully exploiting one of the most attractive advantages of train travel: the ability to eat or sleep while in transit. A long distance traveler can gain 500 or 600 miles a day over driving.
