There are many things to be thankful for and people who deserve praise within the Niles community.
On Sunday, hundreds of motorcyclists gathered to make the fourth annual Burn Run a great success. Praise should be given to Doug Myers and all those who helped him organize this event sponsored by the Niles Township and Howard Township Fire Departments. The Burn Run raises money for the Great Lakes Burn Camp, a place where children who have been traumatized by fire can go.
Also deserving praise is the women's group at Faith Victory Fellowship Church in Buchanan, who have started a backpack program for local children. They will be gathering school supplies and other goodies and presenting them to children in the area who are in need.
Let's give a round of applause to those who won their divisions in the Greater Niles Area Golf Tournament, held last weekend.
Congratulations are in order for Zech Hoyt and Wayne Borr as they were named assistant principals at two Niles Community Schools buildings. Hoyt will be at Ballard Elementary, while Borr will be at Ring Lardner Middle School.
The whole community of Niles deserves praise as they have been chosen as a finalist for the new NBC reality show Three Wishes. Community members are being asked to nominate individuals, organizations and even the city to make any three wishes come true.
Let's give a great Niles welcome to Captains Terry and William Walters, the new commanders of the Niles Salvation Army.
The members of the Niles City Fire and Police Departments, as well as the Michigan State Police, Niles Post, all deserve to be thanked for their outstanding service to the Niles area this week with fires and traffic accidents, and everyday as they risk their own lives to serve and protect us. Be sure to vote for your favorite heroes as the Niles Service League puts together a calendar in their honor.
Also congratulations to the Howard Township Minor League Silverhawks team who tied for the league and round robin championship.
And finally we say goodbye and thank you to Jill Rasmussen-Baker, for her years of service to the community of Buchanan as the pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Buchanan.
