NILES - The Niles Vikings 14U travel baseball team was recently crowned league champions of the Comstock Baseball League.
The team currently has a 17-0 record and is coached by Jack Ort, Russ Johnson, Randy Melvin and is managed by Jim Brawley.
The team is preparing for the CABA World Series, held July 22-30 in St. Clair Shoresand will be serving as the National host team for the Elite World Series being held Aug. 1-7 in Orlando, Fla. at Disney's Wide World of Sports.
Niles will compete against 24 of the best teams in the nation and will see competition better than any they have seen before.
The travel team represents "small town" baseball because most of the players are from Niles or neighboring communities. Most travel teams are made up of the best kids in a city or surrounding cities, forcing them to drive more than two hours just to practice and compete.
The team has been holding fundraisers, which have been very successful, to help pay for costs of the trip
