LINCOLN, Neb. - Former Edwardsburg standout and Nebraska senior Beckey Breisch will be headed to Helsinki, Finland next month to compete in the World Championships.
Late last month Breisch became the first Lady Husker to win a U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the women's discus on June 23 in Carson City, Calif.
By winning the United States title, Breisch earned a spot on her first World Championship squad.
Breisch led the competition through the preliminary round, but fell all the way to fourth place after recording fouls on her first two attempts of the finals.
The two-time NCAA champion made her final toss count, throwing the winning mark of 206-feet-5 to secure victory over four-time U.S. champion Seilala Sua (202-10).
One day after winning the U.S. women's discus title, Breisch finished fifth in the shot put competition Friday held at The Home Depot Center.
Breisch recorded a heave of 58-0.5, second best among competitors in the qualifying round, before fouling on each of her three finals attempts.
The two-time NCAA champion failed to meet the qualifying standard for the World Championships in the event.
Breisch will compete in the World Championships in Helsinki August 6-14.
The preliminaries for the discus will be held on Aug. 7 with the finals scheduled for Aug. 9. Breisch, who is currently ranked No. 17 in the world in the discus, spent much of this past season recovering from a pair of elbow surgeries.
Breisch missed the entire indoor season and competed unattached for the last half of the outdoor season. An eight-time NCAA All-American, Breisch will be entering her senior season at NU after redshirting during the Huskers' 2005 season.
