Last Friday a dream became a reality for Scott and Denise Houck and their five children as their new home built by the Niles-Buchanan Habitat for Humanity was dedicated. All the volunteers who worked to give the family a home should be praised, along with Coldwell Banker for its support.
On a sad note, the members of the Niles Business and Professional Women's Club, held their final meeting this week. The group had been in Niles for 76 years and decided to disband due to many of its members ages and not being able to do the sorts of activities they would like. They should be praised for the number of things these women did for the community of Niles over those many years and for their advocacy for women in the work force.
Also to be praised are the Niles-Buchanan YMCA officials as they have worked diligently to make the new Y become a reality, despite set backs in starting construction due to the costs of materials going up.
The Niles Service League is conducting a fundraiser to feature local police and fire departments, as well as SMCAS employees in a hometown heroes 2006 calendar. Their efforts will be distributed to the community with funds going to those receiving the most votes and through their many worthwhile projects in Niles, such as the babysitting clinic.
Officer Kevin Kosten and the Niles City Police Department are teaching the youth of Niles attending the city of Niles 2005 Summer Parks Program skills needed to become better fishermen, as part of the departments youth program. They will learn so much more from the officers.
