NILES - The Niles-Buchanan YMCA was able to raise funds it needs to build a new facility on the corner of Pokagon and Front streets in Niles, but it wasn't enough to start the construction of a new facility as soon as they hoped.
Construction on the facility was supposed to begin in the fall of 2004, but when the Y officials went out to gather bids on the project, they were in for quite a shock.
YMCA officials took a look at the original plans of the new facility and worked with the architects, the construction management company, volunteers, and banks and are now able to move forward with the project.
The groundbreaking and construction will begin in September 2005, with a completion date within 12-14 months.
Hendrie added additional space is being designed for future construction. The new facility is still going to be larger than the current one located at 315 W. Main St.
Also Lakeland, Niles will still be renting a portion of the facility and their therapy pool will be located there as well.
