NILES - The man found at 4:23 a.m. Thursday morning, after a single car injury crash on Redfield Road, west of Brush Road in Milton Township, in Cass County, has been identified as Ronald Edward Kusmiez, 57, of 13th Street, Niles.
Troopers from the Niles Michigan State Police Post responded to a call and found a 1997 Ford Ranger resting against a tree. Kusmiez was still behind the wheel, not breathing and without a pulse.
Troopers extricated him from the vehicle and started CPR until SMCAS Ambulance Service retook over. Kusmeiz was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial investigations indicate the he fell asleep at the wheel and left the roadway striking the tree according to the Michigan State Police.
It also appears he was not wearing his seatbelt and alcohol was not a factor. The crash remains under investigation.
