He approached each business asking for a $100 contribution.
After 13 years hosting Independence Day fireworks, Greater Dowagiac Chamber of Commerce announced May 2 it would not sponsor a show this year.
Added Chamber Vice President Dr. Timothy Dowsett: "The time has simply come for the Chamber of Commerce to pass this particular baton to another organization. By making our announcement early in the year, we are hopeful another community organization will step up to the plate, as we did in 1991" in a surge of patriotism from the Gulf War.
Mayor Pro Tem Wayne Comstock concurred. "I'd like to thank Barry's Automotive for undertaking the pursuance of proceeding with Fourth of July fireworks. I think he's done a great job, and his wife as well. Wolverine Mutual is pleased to be part of it."
The fireworks display will again be launched by F&F All Seasons of Niles, which is owned by Lori and Philip Fitzgerald. The pyrotechnic operator will be Mark VanDusen, 46, of Cassopolis, who has 10 years experience and has done 90 displays.
