NILES - Helena Kaminski, a member of the Four Flags Garden Club, is seeking the help of Niles area residents to help identify the heritage of a rose bush she tends to at the Niles train depot with the club.
Last year while Kaminski was tending the roses at the depot, she became very interested in a specific rose bush.
Kaminski was determined to find out what kind of rose this was, so she took pictures of them last year. While wintering in Florida, went to the local library to find out anything she could about it.
After many hours of researching through different types of books and examining the plants closely, she came to the conclusion that it was an Empress Josephine rose.
This rose likely came to Niles by way of France as the settlers came to this area.
Kaminski came to Niles in 2002 from Pennsylvania, after the death of her husband Henry, to be near their daughter and granddaughters.
If anyone does have information about this particular rose, please mail it to 131 Columbine, Niles, MI 49120.
