There is no better time to pick up your fishing pole and take your child fishing than June 11-12.
Michigan's Free Fishing Weekend will be held and thousands of families will head to the lake or the nearest river to take part in this annual event.
We believe there is no better way to spend time with your son or daughter than at the ol' fishing hole.
Michigan's Free Fishing Weekend, established in 1986, is a way to enjoy our state's diverse natural resources.
There are more than 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, 11,037 inland lakes and more than 36,000 miles of rivers and streams. Berrien and Cass counties have an abundance of lakes and streams to fish, as well as the St. Joseph River.
Don't forget the pier up in St. Joseph.
There is no excuse for not participating in this event.
Since one can fish from sun up to sun down, there should be nothing to hold you back. The second weekend in June allows residents and non-residents to fish without purchasing a license. So it is time to dust off the old pole, get those lures shined up, dig up some worms in the back yard and head to your "special" spot and land that big one.
At the very least, you can tell some "fish stories" to your friends and neighbors when you get back to work on Monday, June 13.
If you don't have a child of your own to take fishing, take a child who may not have a parent. We are sure that if you get in contact with one of our local agencies, they can arrange for you to spend a day fishing with a child.
The Free Fishing Weekend is a great time to introduce a youngster to fishing. Mentoring is a way to help insure that the practice of conservation is carried on by future generations.
