Three horses hurt in trailer rollover

CASSOPOLIS - The Cass County Sheriff's Office investigated an accident on Calvin Center Road, north of Jeffries, in Cass County's Penn Township.
It was found that a GMC pickup driven by Alexander Udell, 20, of Goshen, Ind., was southbound on Calvin Center pulling a horse trailer.
The trailer's hitch appeared to break, causing the trailer to disconnect from the truck.
The trailer then rolled over numerous times and came to rest in the western ditch.
Three horses were injured in the accident and had to be extricated from the trailer by the Penn Township Fire Department, Nature's Way Animal Emergency Response of White Pigeon, Turner's Towing and volunteers.
The driver was not injured.
The horses were treated on scene by veterinarians.
Cass County Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. reports that on Saturday, May 21, at 10:59 p.m., deputies responded to a personal-injury accident involving a single motor vehicle on Morton Street, near Lindbergh Road in Wayne Township.
Edward Grandstaff, 55, of Decatur, was traveling east on Morton Street when he failed to negotiate a curve.
Grandstaff ran off the road and down a steep embankment, striking several trees. His vehicle overturned and came to rest upside down, trapping Grandstaff inside.
Grandstaff was extricated by members of Wayne Township and Dowagiac fire departments. Grandstaff was airlifted from the scene to Kalamazoo by Air-Care, for treatment of his injuries.
Assisting at the scene were Wayne Township Fire Department, Dowagiac Fire Department, Dowagiac ambulance and Air-Care of Kalamazoo.
Alcohol appears to have been a factor. The accident remains under investigation.
Deputies handled a personal-injury accident on Union Road, just north of Mason Street, on Friday, May 20, at 4:16 p.m. in Porter Township.
A car driven by Carol Fields, 50, of Vandalia, was southbound on Union Road. She was behind a semi driven by Richard Akin, 67, of Elkhart, Ind.
She attempted to pass the semi and collided head-on with a northbound vehicle driven by Joanne Cogdell, 39, of Cassopolis.
Both Mrs. Fields and Mrs. Cogdell were transported to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of their injuries.
Both were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
Porter Fire and Ambulance as well as Newberg Fire assisted on the scene.
Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, which remains under investigation.
Deputies handled a personal-injury accident involving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) on Saturday, May 21, 1:46 p.m. in Newberg Township.
Three juveniles were injured while riding an ATV off Patterson Hill Road in Jones.
The individuals were identified as Benjamin Griner 17, Chelsea Treat, 15, and Brittany Jacobs, 15.
The three juveniles were all riding on a single ATV when they lost control and it overturned. Treat and Jacobs were transported to Three Rivers Area Hospital for treatment of their injuries while Griner was treated at the scene and released.
Cass Ambulance, Newberg Ambulance and Marcellus Fire and Ambulance were also on scene.
No helmets were worn at the time of the accident.
