Chieftains split pair

The Dowagiac varsity baseball team split a pair of games at its own Bryan Frazier Memorial Tournament Saturday.
The Chieftains were defeated by Buchanan in the opening game of the tournament, 7-5. Dowagiac then defeated Bridgman in the consolation game, 8-1.
The win in the consolation game snapped a 13-game losing streak for the Chieftains, who will play host to Battle Creek Lakeview on Tuesday.
In the opening game the Chieftains led 2-0 and 5-3 before falling.
Scott Wilkinson (1-4) took the loss, Jake Cox worked the final inning and a third.
Dowagiac managed eight hits, led by Jamie Simpson who doubled, tripled and drove in three runs. Brandon Simmons also doubled.
Matt Dodson (1-0) got the win in the second game with relief help from Jordan Huey.
Dodson worked five and two-third innings, allowing 1 run on five hits with three strike outs.
Dodson helped out his own cause with a double and three RBIs. Dowagiac also got a double from Simpson and a pair of singles from Wilkinson.
Dowagiac is now 10-14 on the season.
