West Division champs

NILES - For the second straight year the Niles boys' track team can call itself Big 16 Conference West Division champions.
The Vikings hosted undefeated St. Joseph in a West Division showdown on Monday afternoon with the Vikings coming out on top with a 99-66 victory.
Niles picked up wins in the high jump with Kurt Poehlman (6-4), the 100-meter dash with Isaiah Glaze (11.58), the long jump with Otis West (20-5.25), Logan Todd in the 800-meters (2:02.79), West in the 200-meters (22.65), Craig Rumpf in the 400-meters (53.66) and Ricky Phillips Jr. in the 300-meter hurdles (43.64).
Niles also won the 3,200-, 800-, 400- and 1,600-meter relays with times of 9:27.87, 1:37.19, 47.46 and 3:41.86 respectively.
Finishing second for the Vikings were Quinton King in the 100-meters, Aubrey Hopkins in the shot put and discus, Todd in the 1,600-meters, Glaze in the 200-meters, Nicholas Schuck in the 400-meters and Stephen Scally in the 3,200-meters.
Finishing third were Phillips, West, Paul DePoy, Neilson, King, Rob Cinninger and Andrew Wuthnow.
Taking fourths were David Davis, Phillips, Scally, and Daniel Geiger.
It was a heartbreaking setback for the Niles girls' track team Monday afternoon in the final Big 16 Conference West Division meet against St. Joseph.
The night also marked seniors night at Niles High School as all the two girls and 11 guys were recognized on the field.
The boys team picked up the 96-66 win to claim the championship spot. (see related story this page)
The Lady Bears edged the Lady Vikings 86-77.
Winning events for Niles were Nicole Horvath in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles (17.77/54.36), Kaylynn Stephenson in the 100- and 200-meters (13.57/28.36), Kyla Kirkendoll in the shot put (32-7), Autumn Grayson in the 400-meters (1:04.08) and the Niles 3,200-meter relay team which ran a time of 11:08.
Finishing second for the Lady Vikings were Tasha Webster in the 100-meters and long jump, Chelsea Bennett in the shot put and discus, Samantha Brawley in the 1,600-meters and Mariette Strauss in the 200-meters.
Taking third were Ashley Austin in the discus, Brandie Radde and Alexandra Ranft in the high jump, Rebecca Kirschbaum in the 300 hurdles, Elizabeth Durm in the pole vault and Brawley in the 3,200-meters.
Finishing fourth for Niles were Kirschbaum in the 100 hurdles, Austin in the shot put, Brittney Wolverton in the discus, Heather Rogers in the 1,600-meters, Tamara Madison in the 800-meters and Webster in the 200-meters.
The Vikings will travel to Allegan on Friday for the Allegan Invitational set to begin at 2 p.m.
