The fifth piece in Dowagiac's public art collection, and the second given by Wanda Franklin's family, stands 8 1/2 feet tall at the corner of Commercial Street and Pennsylvania Avenue outside the Dogwood Fine Arts Festival headquarters in Huntington bank.
Langland, of Granger, Ind., created the Tremble's piece that started it all, Dance of Creation in Farr Park, and its companion, Resting Dancer by City Hall, which Franklins presented in 1999. He was in attendance.
Denise Wierman, a member of the Dogwood Visual Arts Committee, who introduced Akamu, said Mount'n View "speaks of her perfect sense of scale. This piece doesn't look like it just got dropped here. It belongs here. It belongs in this community. It shows her ability to appeal to children, which is what our donor wanted, and yet speaks to adults using complex and meaningful metaphors.
