Dowagiac thinclads fall to host Vikings

NILES - The visiting Dowagiac girls' and boys' track teams both were defeated by the host Vikings Wednesday afternoon in a Big 16 Conference West Division meet.
The boys' squad lost 119-42, while the girls' squad lost 110-45.
Despite the lopsided losses, Dowagiac turned in some solid performances in the meet which was postponed on Tuesday due to weather conditions.
The Chieftains had six first place finishes in the girls' meet, two seconds, a third and seven fourth place finishes.
Ashley Urbanski was a double individual winner, as well as a member of the winning 400-meter relay team.
Katy Stuppy and Anne O'Keefe both won individual events and were part of the relay unit.
Jaskiran Kaur was the winner in the 3,200-meters as she ran 20:22.
Urbanski won the long jump with a leap of 15-feet, captured the 100-meters with a 12.96 and was second in the pole vault with a height of 6-feet-6.
Stuppy won the 200-meters with a time of 27.5. O'Keefe won the pole vault with a height of 9-feet and was second in the 400-meters with a time of 1:08.65. O'Keefe was also fourth in the long jump.
Urbanski, O'Keefe and Stuppy were joined by Sada Nealey to win the 400-meter relay with a time of 53.39.
Also finishing fourth for the Chieftains on Wednesday were Kate Duszynski (discus), Samantha Stone (100- and 300-meter hurdles), Nealey (100-meters), Jessica Pence (400-meters) and Kayleigh Sundman (800-meters).
In the boys' meet, Dowagiac got just two first place finishes as Elijah Caldwell won the 200-meters with a time of 23.93 and Kyle Bennett won the pole vault with a height of 11-feet-6.
Finishing second for the Chieftains were Caldwell in the long jump (18-1.5), Ryan Casey in the shot put (39-4), Bennett in the discus (110-2), Konner Smith in the 110- and 300-meters hurdles (20.92/51.77), Russell Sizemore in the 100-meters (11.71) and Sam Preston in the 400-meters and pole vault (54.38, 5-3).
Preston was also third in the 800-meters (2:16.85), while James Laymon was third in the high jump with a height of 5-feet-3.
Brad Lee and Caldwell were both third in the 1,600-meters and 400-meters respectively.
Lee ran 5:07.49 and Caldwell ran 55.14.
Sizemore was fourth in the 200-meters with a time of 24.42 to round out the placers for the Chieftains.
