Susan Miller, candidate for a four-year term on the Dowagiac Board of Education May 3, taught for 10 years - five years in Edwardsburg and five years in Dowagiac, where she graduated from Union High School in 1978.
Miller, 45, of 201 Green St., was influenced to teach by her desire to help others.
She taught two years at the high school and three years at the elementary level, but her career ended abruptly due to an injury that left her disabled.
Her daughter, Sarah, who graduated in 2003, attends Southwestern Michigan College. Son Alex is in seventh grade.
After graduating from DUHS with high honors and the All-Sports Award, Sue Stoops attended SMC, transferred to Western Michigan University to major in physical education and health and minor in coaching.
To navigate budget-cut-infested waters, Miller said the climate cannot be described in terms of "the schools" and "the community. Everybody has to join together" and volunteer. "Board members shouldn't get paid," she said.
