Safety and preservation will benefit greatly from the Michigan Department of Transportation's (MDOT) multi-million dollar investment in southwest Michigan this year.
During the 2005 construction season, MDOT will rehabilitate more than 145 (12 percent) miles of the region's 1,221 miles of roadways and improve 38 (seven percent) of the region's 496 bridges.
In addition, 25 Capital Preventive Maintenance (CPM) projects, programmed yearly, are planned to improve pavement/bridge conditions and extend the life of the roadway.
Projects in southwest Michigan that will enhance the region's infrastructure include:
Resurface and left-turn lane construction on M-51 in Berrien County.
Replace two I-196 bridges over I-94 near Benton Harbor.
Repair 17 bridges on I-94 from 12th Street to 40th Street in Kalamazoo County and on US-131.
