Two Cass County school board members, Larry Seurynck of the Dowagiac Board of Education and Douglas L. Stickney of the Edwardsburg Board of Education, received awards from the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB), it was announced Tuesday.
Their efforts to become more effective school leaders and to better guide their districts will be recognized at an MASB awards ceremony.
Awards are earned for classes completed in MASB's leadership training program, as well as for conference attendance, years of service and leadership activities.
This year, more than 1,000 school board members statewide participated in the school board association's professional development program, Certified Boardmember Awards (CBA), for elected school leaders.
It honors board members for seven levels of achievement.
To achieve Level One and become "certified," board members take 30 hours of classroom training in subjects ranging from school law and finance to community relations.
Higher levels of recognition require even more coursework, service and leadership responsibilities.
Seurynck qualified for CBA.
Stickney received CBA and an Award of Merit, which is Level One plus 45 education credits.
