The Dowagiac junior varsity softball team split its season opening doubleheader with host Portage Central on Tuesday.
Dowagiac won the opener 5-1, but dropped the nightcap, 10-6.
Katie Roach picked up the win as she struck out six and allowed six hits.
Beth Williams had two doubles for the Chieftains, who also got a double from Lynne Zachary.
Calie Daniels and Sara Ausra each had two hits.
In the second game Lori Key took th loss.
Daniels and Roach each doubled twice, while Zachary and Key also doubled for the Chieftains.
Molly Seurynck and Zachary had two singles.
