The Dowagiac varsity golf team opened its season on Wednesday with a Big 16 Conference non-divisional victory over Sturgis.
The Chieftains shot 287 while Sturgis shot 299 at Klinger Lake.
Carly Gantt led the Chieftains with a score of 59. Jessy Oprea shot 68. Brooke Lamb finished with a 79, while Katie Mattix shot 87, Alyson Wheeler 89 and Brittany Munson 91.
Johnson, who returns to coach the team after a year's absence to coach track, said that he has one one returning player.
Dowagiac lists just two seniors and two juniors on the roster. The Chieftains have eight freshmen.
Also on the squad are Taylor Townsend, Aislinn Frantz, Tracy Valenzuela, Tonya Scherer, Charneal Patterson and Ashley Smith.
The Chieftains return to action following spring break on Tuesday, April 12 at South Haven.
