LANSING - Legislation introduced Thursday by Dowagiac's Rep. Neal Nitz, R-Baroda, will allow local governments easier access to state sewer bonds.
The cost currently incurred by local governments often hinders their ability to undertake such projects.
Speaker of the House Craig DeRoche said these bonds are important for Michigan's economic growth.
The legislation will redistribute the way bonds are appropriated.
Currently, 90 percent of the money goes into the revolving fund and 10 percent goes into water funds. Under the legislation, 80 percent will go into the revolving fund, 10 percent will remain in the water funds and the final 10 percent will go to grants to get the projects up and running.
