NILES - Tragedy struck Pete's Patio, a Niles restaurant located at 2433 North 5th Street for the second time last week. On Monday, Feb. 28, a husband and wife who were both employed at the restaurant were killed in a traffic accident.
On Saturday evening, March 5, a call came in at 7:58 pm, reporting a fire, according to the Niles Township Police.
At 7:59 pm, one minute later, two fire trucks from Niles Township plus an additonal fire engine from the City of Niles arrived on the scene.
The fire, which was located at the back of the building in the kitchen area, was under control and extinguished by 8:15 pm. An estimated $5,000 damage to the contents of the kitchen was reported. The fire was contained to the hooding system above and around the pizza oven.
The cause is still under investigation. The restaurant was open and operating at the time of the fire.
