Dowagiac Mayor Donald D. Lyons extended a Proclamation of Appreciation Monday night to Iraq veteran Ashley Lott, a 2002 Union High School graduate.
Spc. Lott, who turned 21 in February, completed her assigned duties while stationed at Camp Anaconda in northern Iraq, delivering supplies to her fellow soldiers in Fallujah, and later supervising meal service for U.S. forces.
She is a member of the 1462nd Transportation Company of the Michigan National Guard of Howell and has served her nation in peace time and in war.
Members of her unit also come from the Lansing, Kalamazoo and Battle Creek areas.
She has now returned home safely from duty to her family and friends.
The oldest of three children, she is the daughter of Shelia Sivley of Dowagiac and of Daniel Lott of Three Rivers.
Mayor Lyons called upon citizens of Dowagiac to "join me in recognizing the vital contribution made by Ashley and her fellow soldiers to our community, our nation and our world."
At DUHS Lott played clarinet in band, participated in tennis and golf and acted in drama class. She worked at Felpausch and at Sunny Acres at Sister Lakes, and was an assistant recruiter at the Armory until March 2003. She worked at Capt. Jack's at Sister Lakes during the summer of 2003.
The 4-foot-11 granddaughter of Gerald Lott joined the Guard to earn college money.
