Dowagiac upsets Trojans

The Dowagiac varsity basketball team snapped a 10-game losing streak Tuesday night as it upset host Sturgis, 51-47 in a Big 16 Conference non-divisional contest.
The Chieftains (2-16) outscored the Trojans (10-8) 20-16 in the final quarter to erase a 33-31 deficit heading into the final eight minutes.
Dowagiac stayed with the Trojans throughout the contest.
Sturgis led 14-9 after one period of play, but ended up in a 24-all tie at halfitme when the Chieftains outscored them, 15-10, in the second quarter.
Sturgis reclaimed the lead heading into the fourth quarter after outscoring the Chieftains, 9-7, in the third.
Dowagiac caught and passed the Trojans in the fourth quarter to pick up its second victory of the season.
Isaiah Jones led the Chieftains with 16 points, while Chris Primley and Amos Clark both scored seven points.
Michael DeRose and Jamere Bacon each finished with five points.
Bo Felt led the Trojans with 15 points. Zach Gentile finished with nine points.
JV basketball
The Dowagiac junior varsity basketball team was defeated by Sturgis, 43-37.
No further information from that contest was available at press time.
On Friday night, the Chieftains were edged by host Lakeshore, 45-41.
Dowagiac (4-13, 1-11) led 11-6 after one period of play, but trailed 19-15 at halftime.
Dowagiac continued to trail after three quarters, 32-28,
Andrew Cuthbert had 22 points to lead the Chieftains, who also got six points each from Tony Black and D.J. Edgerly.
Dowagiac will host Benton Harbor on Friday night.
