NILES - The Niles teachers and District officials have join forces to again offer a summer Driver's Ed program
One area school district will be offering Driver's Education to all students in the area. In making the announcement Niles Superintendent Doug Law said "We are very pleased to offer this service to our community."
Many school districts in the area have dropped their Driver's Education program because of a lack of state funding.
For the second consecutive summer, the district and the teachers' union have worked to develop an affordable program. The union has agreed to a reduced wage in order to make the program available to area families.
The program will be available to all area students who are 14 years 8 months of age at the start of instruction.
The cost of the summer program will be $265 and is due at the time of registration.
Registration forms are available at the high school main office. Niles students can register for the program from now until April 22. Out of district students can register between March 21 and April 22. The cost of the program is the same for all students. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis.
Two sessions will be offered this summer. The first session will run from Monday, June 13 through Friday July 1. The second session will start on Tuesday, July 5 and ends on Monday, July 25.
The district will need a minimum of 220 students to make the program work. Last summer, over 230 students registered for the program. The program is designed to accommodate 240 students.
In order for students to participate in the program they must met the following conditions:
1. Be a United States citizen.
2. Be a Michigan resident.
3. Be at least 14 years 8 months on the first day of class.
4. Have proof of 20/20 vision or corrective vision.
5. Pay the registration fee of $265 by the April 22nd deadline.
