BUCHANAN - Early on, it looked like Buchanan's volleyball team would struggle against Michigan Lutheran Thursday night. The Bucks trailed 8-4 in game one and were having trouble with their serve receiving, coach Lisa Holok said.
When the Bucks got a sideout, however, they found strength in their serve that switched the match's momentum and carried them to a quick 3-0 victory over the Titans.
After trailing in the first game, Buchanan went on a seven point run to take control, led by the serving of Jill Woodrick. Woodrick had two aces in stretch that put the Bucks up 11-8.
Buchanan outscored Michigan Lutheran 21-10 to end the game winning 25-18.
The momentum carried into the second game when the Bucks scored the first five points and got out to a 14-4 lead. They won the game 25-16. Buchanan had four aces in the second game, two by Heather Lentz and two by Jaclyn Mummaw.
The third game was much of the same, with the Bucks getting ahead 6-0 early.
The early surge was led by Lentz's four aces. Buchanan was up 20-7 before Holok put in players from the bench.
With the Bucks' second string in, the Titans went on a mini-run of their own, pulling to within 23-18. But Katie Backus' block gave Buchanan its final point, as the Bucks won 25-18 to complete the sweep.
While Holok wasn't impressed by her team's serve receiving, she said the blocks played good defense throught the match.
The Bucks made short work of Michigan Lutheran, winning the match in less than an hour. It was Buchanan's second home win in as many nights. The Bucks beat Cass at home Wednesday 3-1.
Buchanan plays in the Bronson Invitational this weekend before another home match on Monday. The Bucks welcome Niles to their gym that night.
