Fire causes $70,000 in damage to St. Joseph home

ST. JOSEPH - A fire at 948 Wisconsin in the City of St. Joseph caused $70,000 damage to the structure and its contents New Year's morning, according to Fire Department Capt. Scott Moore.
Moore reported the fire department responded to the call at 7:52 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, and arrived on scene at 7:54 to find a well-involved basement fire in the occupied structure.
The sleeping family was alerted by working smoke detectors in the home and escaped unharmed.
Smoke detectors "without a doubt saved their lives," Moore said.
The blaze was brought under control by 9 a.m.
Cause of the fire remains undetermined.
No injuries were reported.
