Cass County Youth Council approved two grants Friday at its regular monthly meeting at Zeke's restaurant in Dowagiac.
A grant for $420 was awarded to the Human Services Coordinating Council (HSCC) and Woodlands, the fiduciary agency for purchase of awards and T-shirts for the upcoming asset-building celebration on Feb. 1.
Funding will also be used to help cover the cost of dinners for attendees and their families.
Cass County has promoted asset-building for the last few years. Asset-building implies "intentionally working to increase individual and community strengths, ranging from personal qualities to good habits to volunteering in the community."
Youth involved in asset-building are better able to handle bullying and other forms of violence.
Smoking, drinking, drug use and sexual activity are also reduced.
Another grant approved to not exceed $1,000 was approved by the council for the YMCA Camp Eberhart Youth Council Day.
This winter fun day planned for Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, is for any children and families associated with any youth council agency.
Activities (subject to weather conditions) will include cross country skiing, ice skating, downhill tubing, indoor games and Frisbee golf. Food will be provided.
Children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult.
The Youth Council received a check for $1,410.64 from Grand Rapids-based B93 as its share of $383,000 proceeds from the radio station's roof sit.
