Niles' wrestlers opened their 2004-05 season Thursday with two convincing victories. The Vikings lost at just five weight classes in easily beating Vicksburg and Mattawan at Delton Kellogg.
The bigger of the two wins came against Vicksburg, a 67-7 triumph. The Vikings had eight victories by pins, seven of them coming in the first two minutes of the matches.
The fastest pin came at 135 pounds when Rod Leneway beat Kevin Robertson in 23 seconds.
Niles stayed strong in the next meet against Mattawan. The Vikings pinned nine of their opponents in a 57-15 victory.
Again, the Vikings worked quickly, getting six of their pins in the first two minutes, and three in the first minute.
Matt Poehlman pinned his opponent in 30 seconds in the 119 weight class.
Niles' Mason Stevenson had the shortest night of the Vikings. At 125 pounds, he spent just 1:36 total wrestling his two matches. He pinned his first opponent in 44 seconds, followed by a pin in 48 seconds.
The Vikings host the Niles Invitational today, beginning at 10 a.m. Buchanan, Benton Harbor, Sturgis and Mendon will be at the invitational.
