A big first quarter was all Buchanan's girls basketball team would need to earn a 39-28 victory Thursday over Edwardsburg at home.
In the first period, Buchanan outscored the Eddies 13-1. Sheena Bradshaw scored six of the Bucks' points, including a 3-pointer.
Over the next three quarters, Edwardsburg actually outscored the Bucks by a point, but Buchanan's initial cushion was enough to get the win.
Dee Dee Thompson scored a game-high 12 points for Buchanan. She came to life in the second quarter, scoring 10 of her points in the period.
The Bucks had two other players in double figures. Bradshaw ended the game with 11 points, and Hayley Cashier scored 10. Buchanan had just two other players score.
Thompson added eight rebounds to her point total, and Cashier grabbed seven boards.
For Edwardsburg, Susanna Martino led the way with six points. Eight players scored for the Eddies.
Each team hit three 3-pointers. Edwardsburg outshot Buchanan from the line, hitting 5-of-9. The Bucks hit 2-of-8 free throws.
Buchanan runs its record to 6-12 overal and 6-7 in the Lakeland Conference. The Bucks are off for a week before facing Brandywine on the road in their final regular-season game.
Edwardsburg falls to 8-11 and 5-8 in conference. The Eddies also have a week off before playing Coloma at home in their final game.
