CASSOPOLIS - The Cass County Major Crimes Task Force is conducting an investigation into the serious injury of a 2-year-old child that occurred in the 100 block of Hilton Street in Cassopolis Thursday.
The Cassopolis Police Department responded to the Lakeland Family Clinic in Cassopolis at 12:47 p.m. Thursday in regards to an unresponsive child that was brought into the clinic and later transported to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac for serious injuries.
Upon arrival there and after the ensuing investigation by the Cassopolis Police Department, the Cass County Major Crimes Task Force was asked to assist in the investigation.
Task Force investigators, assisted by the Michigan Family Independence Agency (FIA), then conducted an investigation into the case.
At about 5:30 p.m., investigators, after consultation with the Cass County Prosecutor's Office, arrested the purported father of the child from information gained during the investigation.
This subject was lodged at the Cass County Jail on the charge of assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder.
This subject's information will be made available upon his arraignment in Cass County Fourth District Court today, investigators said.
The child, whose name was withheld upon the mother's request, was in critical condition and being treated at Bronson Hospital, Kalamazoo, where he was later transported.
