Nail biters: Eddies, Cass pull out fourth quarter victories

EDWARDSBURG - Host Edwardsburg pitched a shutout in the fourth quarter to preserve a 36-34 Lakeland Conference victory Tuesday night against visiting River Valley.
The River Valley Lady Mustangs opened the first quarter of Tuesday night's Lakeland Conference game by hitting two straight three-point shots to catch the Lady Eddies off guard.
Edwardsburg responded with Lindsay Moellenberndt's inside game, as she scored six first quarter points. The Lady Eddies led at the end of the first quarter 15-14.
The second quarter consisted of the same inside, outside tempo. River Valley with its outside game, and the Lady Eddies with their inside game.
The two teams went into halftime tied up at 23-23.
The Lady Eddies started the third quarter with half court presses that created turnovers that led to points, but River Valley was able to stay in the game with their beyond-the-arc sharpshooting.
The Lady Mustangs took the lead after the third quarter 34-31.
The Lady Eddies tied the game up in the early fourth quarter.
A key basket by Shelley Roberts with six seconds to go in the game, broke a 34-34 tie.
The Lady Mustangs called a time out to design a last second play. The ball was thrown in, the Mustangs raced up court, but time expired before the Mustangs could get a shot off.
The Lady Eddies captured a 36-34 victory home victory.
The Lady Eddies have beaten the Mustangs three times this year to sweep the season series.
Moellenberndt led the Lady Eddies with nine points, Julie Harness added eight points, and Roberts netted six points .
The Mustangs were led by Brittany Warren with 11 points, Kayla Schmidt with nine points, and Maggie Hausmann with six points.
The Lady Eddies improve to 5-7 in conference action, and 8-10 overall for the season. They will now travel to Buchanan Thursday night, and return home again Thursday Nov. 11 to host the Coloma Comets in the last regular season game.

EAU CLAIRE - A 30-point effort from Eau Claire's Jacquel Rogers wasn't enough for the Lady Beavers to pull off the upset Tuesday night against visiting Cassopolis.
The Lady Rangers used a balanced scoring attack, led by Kelsey Gordon's 23 points, to hold off upset-minded Eau Claire, 64-62.
Cassopolis led 14-10 after one period of play and 33-32 at the intermission.
The Lady Rangers held on to its one-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter as both teams scored 14 points in the third period.
Cassopolis outscored the Lady Beavers 17-16 in the final quarter to hold on for the non-conference victory.
Besides Gordon's total, the Lady Rangers also got 18 points from Michelle James and 11 points from Jealyn Foston.
No other Eau Claire player reached double figures.
