Brandywine won it's first game of the season last week, a 33-7 triumph over River Valley, but the Bobcats were guided to victory by an unlikely source.
When starting quarterback Jeff VanLaere went down in the second game of the season with a broke finger, junior Brian Westveer was asked to step up.
Though it took him a few games to learn the offense, Bobcat head coach Terry Borr said Westveer has stepped up and learned his role. He proved that by throwing two touchdown passes and running for another in Friday's victory.
Guiding a winless team to a big win on Homecoming earned Westveer the Daily Star's Male Athlete of the Week for Sept. 19-25.
Westveer had experience at quarterback coming into the season, but hadn't enjoyed much success, so the victory was particularly sweet, he said.
He was quick to point out, however, that the win was a team effort.
Westveer added that the Bobcats are going to work even harder now in hopes of getting a second victory Friday at Bridgman.
