Hayley Cashier's numbers last week weren't gaudy, but they never really are.
She doesn't score in the 20s consistently and she doesn't get triple doubles. It's her intangibles and hard play that allow her to be such a benefit to Buchanan's girls' basketball team.
Last week she scored 23 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in two games. The Bucks went 1-1, but that one win was an upset over Berrien Springs in a Lakeland Conference battle.
Her consistent play and ability to help her team win earned Cashier the Niles Daily Star's Female Athlete of the Week honor for Sept. 19-25.
Though only a freshman, Cashier has already made valuable contributions to the team, Buchanan head coach Bill Weaver said. He said she was an integral part in the upset victory over the Shamrocks.
Cashier said she always plays as hard as she can and, as long as the entire team does so, the Bucks are going to be successful.
She admitted, though, that there is room for improvement for her and the team as a whole. Cashier said the Bucks are passing well right now, but still need to work on moving the ball on the court better.
