NILES - Two Niles city council members commented Monday on recent action taken by the City of Niles relating to policing services provided by the city to Niles Township residents.
Last week, City of Niles officials said they expect Niles Township to pay for the cost of a police dispatcher, part of an agreement between the two municipalities.
Also, city officials said the City of Niles will no longer answer police calls in the township during times when the township's police department isn't manned.
At least one township official said those moves by the city came as a surprise.
However, Niles City Council member Scott Clark said they should have surprised no one.
Councilmember Robert Chute's comments were similar. "I don't think the citizens of Niles Township understand what it means that the city can no longer respond to calls. I just hope someone doesn't get hurt because the township doesn't want to support its police department," Chute said.
