EDWARDSBURG - Saturday and Sunday, National One-Design sailors from around the country came to Eagle Lake to pay tribute to a man who taught many to become sailors, the late John P. Makielski.
A former National One-Design World's Champion, Makielski was Commodore many years of the association. Seventeen boats in all participated.
Gary Donatelli and wife, Judi as crew from Akron, Ohio, took first place. "John came to our lake in about 1966," Guy said. "He has done more for sailing and this lake (Eagle Lake) than any other man," he added, referring to his encouragement of youth to learn to sail.
Second place, also went to a team from Ohio, Al Bollis and Kenny Abrams.
Third Place were Jolly Booth and Valerie McHugh, from South Bend, Ind. and Washington, D.C. They represented the Eagle Lake Sailing Club as did the fourth place team, Bill Krammer and his wife, Diane and fifth place: Carolyn Hahn and crew Laura Makielski.
Also, in the first race of the regatta, were the Makielski brothers, Mark of Edwardsburg and Paul of Whittier, Calif., who sailed together in honor of their father, thus making a grand total of three Makielski siblings and three grandchildren sailing in his honor.
