Niles picked a good time to play it's best game of the season.
The Vikings gave up just one goal Tuesday, a penalty kick, to No. 10 St. Joseph in battling the Bears to a 1-1 tie in double overtime. Niles head coach Jerry Holtgren said his team played better than he'd seen it play all year.
The Bears got on the board first after they were awarded a penalty kick at the 27:50 for rough play in the box. The kick got past Viking goalie Cory Coquillard and St. Joseph had a 1-0 lead.
After the penalty kick, Niles' defense kept the Bears' offense from scoring, one of the keys to the game, Holtgren said.
Niles evened the score at the 57:42 mark in the second half with a rebound goal from Danny Rodts. The score remained for more than 50 minutes, and the teams ended in a 1-1 tie after double overtime.
In the junior varsity game Tuesday, St. Joseph beat Niles 4-1. The Vikings' goal was scored by Julian Freas on a pass from Brandon Slates.
