The Bears of St. Joseph may have walked away with a win, but Buchanan is not too upset about it. They played a great game and never seemed to give up, head coach Bill Weaver said.
St. Joseph threw their full court press at Buchanan early in the first quarter giving the Bucks a bit of a challenge right away.
St. Joe ended the first quarter with a 23-15 lead over Buchanan.
The first half seemed like the battle of the three pointers. Sheena Bradshaw gave the Bucks four 3 pointers, three of them being in the first quarter alone.
Hayley Cashier also added eight points in the first half. By half-time St. Joe had a 10 point lead over Buchanan 32-22.
Buchanan seemed pretty tired by the third quarter, but they never gave up hope and played hard.
St. Joe's Anna Schueneman bombed 3-pointer after 3-pointer in the third, giving the Bears the biggest lead of the night, ending the third with a 45-29 lead. The inside game was tough for both teams, so they relied on their outside shooters to pull them through.
By the fourth quarter St. Joe seemed to be getting tired. The Bucks tried hard to make a comeback. Late in the fourth Buchanan came back full force. DeeDee Thompson and Katie Backus added four points each and Hayley Cashier added three points, but it wasn't enough to catch up. One last effort from Danielle Bachleda attempting to make a 3-pointer put her on the foul line with 0.2 seconds left. She made 2-of-3 and cut Buchanan's loss by only seven points. Sheena Bradshaw sat out the fourth quarter due to knee problems.
St. Joseph sophomore Rebecca Ziebart had a career high of 13 points.
The loss puts Buchanans record at 1-5, 1-1 in the league.
Buchanan's JV team was also up-ended by St. Joseph, 49-27. Emily Ross had nine points for the Bucks and Lindsey Borr added six. St. Joseph's Andrea Vonk and Anna Myers both had 10 points. K.K. Ryan added nine points.
