As far as Buchanan head football coach is concerned, the selection for the Niles Daily Star's Athlete of the Week for Sept. 5-11 is clear — it's Bucks' senior quarterback Gordon Bryant.
Austin is refering to Bryant's six touchdown effort Friday against Brandywine. leading Buchanan to a 62-12 pounding of the Bobcats.
Bryant's performance was not only stellar, it was efficient as well. The quarterback completed 4-of-5 passes for four touchdowns and 111 yards.
His only incompletion Friday was his first pass of the game, a long bomb off that was nearly touchdown pass number five. Buchanan receiver Eric Cole had his defender beat, and Bryant's pass was on target but bounced off of Cole's fingers.
Bryant got it done on the ground, as well. He rushed four times for 75 yards and two scores.
Austin said in all his years as a head coach, he couldn't think of one play who put on a performance as dominating as Bryant's was against Brandywine.
While Bryant has done well for the Bucks all season, he hadn't had many chances to exhibit his skills because of Buchanan's rush-heavy offense. But Austin always knew what Bryant was capable of.
Bryant has captained the Bucks offense that leads the Lakeland Conference in scoring, thanks to the 62 points racked up against Brandywine. He has also been a big reason Buchanan is 3-0 to start this season.
Bryant said he is excited about being named Athlete of the Week, but credits his line and the rest of the Bucks' offense for his success. He said he's never started 3-0 in his football career.
The quarterback added, however, that the season is young and Buchanan still has work to do.
