Despite suffering the worst loss of the season last week, a 62-12 blowout at the hands of Buchanan, Brandywine head coach saw a ray of hope from his 0-3 team.
Borr has looked from game-to-game improvement from his young team all year, and he said he said his offense progress when it scored its first points of the season at Buchanan.
If the Bobcats are going to continue to improve, they must do it behind their backup quarterback. Senior Jeff VanLaere, who started the season at the position, is most likely out for the rest of the season with a broken ring finger on his right, throwing hand.
VanLaere injured the finger two weeks ago in the first half of Brandywine's 40-0 loss to Centreville. Junior Brian Westveer filled in the rest of the game and last week against Buchanan.
Against the Bucks, Brandywine moved the ball better than it had all season. The Bobcats gained 181 total yards, a season-high. Of that total, 128 yards came on the ground. Brandywine also had a rushing touchdown.
Brandywine still struggled in its passing game, as Westveer completed 6-of-19 passes for 53 yards and two interceptions.
Although the numbers weren't great, Borr tried to add some different facets to the Bobcats' offense last week. Westveer threw a number of long bombs that fell incomplete, but the important thing, Borr said, is that his team is trying.
Brandywine also ran a fake punt against Buchanan. The fake failed to get a first down, but Borr said it showed a glimpse of what he wants to do with his offense.
Borr also saw what he hopes is a sign of things to come from sophomore running back Kyle Jones. In his first action on offense, Jones, also a linebacker, carried the ball 11 times for 63 yards.
Jones figures to play more when Brandywine travels to Cass tonight. The game is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m.
