Samantha Brawley finished first in Niles' three-way cross country meet at Southwestern Michigan College on Wednesday to guide the Vikings to victory.
Niles had four top 10 finishes to finish one point ahead of Buchanan. Decatur did not have enough runners for an official score.
Brawley won the race in 22:32. Also in the top 10 for the Vikings were Heather Rogers in fourth place at 26:00, Whitney Shearer was sixth at 26:33 and Angel Brown in ninth at 27:00.
Amanda Smith finished 12th for Niles with a time of 28:20. Tami Madison took 13th at 28:33. Chelsea Clark and Heather Antos finished 14th and 15th, respectively, with times of 31:07. Mehgen Flynn placed 16th for Niles at 31:16.
Before the season began, VandenHeede said his runners had a lot of room for improvement, so their times should steadily get better over the course of the season. After Wednesday's meet, he said he is beginning to see better times.
