CASSOPOLIS - A 19-year-old Dowagiac man buying pseudoephedrine to make methamphetamine will end up in jail if he violates the probation sentence he received Friday morning in Cass County Circuit Court.
Hugh Lane of 52730 Lake View Drive was involved with two companions Feb. 20 in acquiring the pills used to produce methamphetamine when they each bought several packages individually at several different centers in Dowagiac, according to court records.
Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz said it was a very serious activity that only leads to trouble.
Defense attorney Thomas Keller of South Bend, Ind., agreed with Fitz that Lane had no other offenses or a juvenile record. He said Lane was enrolled in high school and is out on job interviews.
Dodge said Lane was a suitable candidate for probation without jail and imposed two years pursuant to the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act. He also ordered Lane to complete his high school diploma or obtain a general education degree, preferably a diploma.
In other sentences:
Jeremy Adams, 23, of 1620 Superior Street, Niles, received two years probation for resisting and obstructing a police officer on Jan. 16 on Dick Street.
Cass County sheriff's deputies went to a mobile home park to arrest Adams on an outstanding warrant of a suspended driver's license. He fled through a window and ran into a police officer at the back of the mobile home, struggled and was subdued with a taser.
He also received a $960 probation supervision fee, $60 crime victim's fee, a $60 state cost, a court cost of $450 and restitution of $92.50.
Dennis Anderson, 41, of 100 Mishawaka Road, Apt. 45, Elkhart, Ind., received 180 days jail, $60 crime victim's fee and a $60 state cost for possession of oxycontin on June 18 on Depot Street in Cassopolis.
Arvin Black, 41, of 202 Grand Blvd., Dowagiac, received one year in jail for third-degree fleeing police, a concurrent year in jail for second offense assaulting a police officer and 53 days credit for time served for each, driving with a suspended license, possession of fireworks and driving with an open container on July 5 on Grand Boulevard in Dowagiac. Black fled police when he was stopped by Cass County sheriff's deputies for driving with one headlight.
Robert Saxton Jr., 29, of 311 E. Jefferson St., Cassopolis, received 180 days in jail, $60 crime victim's fee and a $60 state cost for resisting and obstructing a police officer on July 3 at 417 Graham St. in Cassopolis for violation of a protection order and a concurrent one year in jail, $60 crime victim's fee, a $60 state cost and restitution of $850 for aggravated domestic violence on June 25, also at 417 Graham St.
Saxton assaulted his girlfriend with a mop handle, according to court records.
