Ben Landgraf's season didn't start the way he intended.
The Niles' golfer who missed qualifying for the state tournament by one stroke last year opened this season with the worst round of his high school career.
Beginning your senior year that way might shake most golfers, but not Landgraf.
Landgraf rebounded and has led the Vikings into first place in the Southwest Michigan Athletic Conference West Division. His performance was good enough for him to be named Niles Daily Star Athlete of the Week for Aug. 15-21.
He began last week by placing seventh overall out of 115 golfers at the Coldwater Invitational on Aug. 16. He only improved from there, taking third place at the SMAC meet Aug. 17, and again placing third at the Gull Lake Invitational Aug. 18.
He started this week where last week ended. He won medalist honors at the SMAC West meet Monday with a two-under-par. His performance helped Niles win first place and take over the division lead.
But it isn't just Landgraf's play that helps Niles, his coach said.
"He's been playing very well," Gunder said of Landgraf, "but it isn't just his shooting. He's an excellent team leader."
This is Landgraf's fourth year on the varsity team. Gunder said his experience and leadership is especially important this season because Niles has three freshmen on the varsity team.
Landgraf said he doesn't see himself as a mentor to the freshmen players, but as a friend who can help them on the golf course.
Gunder said Landgraf's sportsmanship has gained him the respect of other players and coaches, as well as his teammates.
The Vikings' young team has continued improving over the course of this season. Landgraf said the team is coming together well and has an excellent shot at winning the conference.
As for his personal goals, Landgraf said he would like to qualify for the state tournament this year. Falling just short of state last season left a bad taste in his mouth, he said.
Gunder said that Landgraf has a good chance at making state because of his determination.
