Column: Olympic events I’d like to see

With the Olympics winding down, I was talking with some colleagues the other day about how poor the attendance was in Greece.
Most of the time when I get to see a shot of the crowd there is just nobody there.
Be it basketball, track and field or beach volleyball, the stands always seem to be half-empty.
I wondered aloud if anyone thought people were afraid to come to the Olympic Games due to the amount of media coverage that said they were unsafe.
I also wondered aloud if people just don't care any more about the Olympics.
I have two thoughts on that subject.
First, the games have been forever tarnished by corruption and scandal. The games have been forever diminished by the fact that professional athletes are now playing in the games.
The passion in which amateur athletes compete is far greater than that of professional, who seem to be doing us a favor by coming to the games.
Secondly, I wonder if people are not tired of some of the sports in which these athletes compete?
Let's face it, there are some Olympic sports that are just not that exciting to watch on television.
I have a few ideas to help create both interest in watching the games and participating in them.
Let's make swearing and drinking Olympic sports.
Lord knows that Americans are the kings of both.
Wouldn't it be something to watch Olympic Cussing?
I know a few people personally that could probably medal in the sport.
Heck, I probably could make the podium if it were a sport.
A lot of countries feel that they can drink with the best of them.
Drinking is a national pastime in some parts of the world.
The events could be numerous in this sport.
You could have Gold Medals for pure volume consumed as well as speed and accuracy.
Now obviously I know swearing and drinking will never be official Olympic Sports and I certainly am not promoting them either.
I just think we could get more people interested in the Olympics if there were more sports that the average Joe could relate to.
Talk about your reality television!
For now, we will have to be satisfied with swimming and diving, cycling, volleyball, baseball, softball, soccer, wrestling and weight lifting.
Perhaps some day in the future we will have a new set of Olympic sports that we can all enjoy and maybe even participate in.
Then again, maybe we should just leave things the way they are.
