With the beginning of the scholastic sports year, the Niles Daily Star and the Dowagiac Daily News will again be selecting weekly Athletes of the Week.
This year, however, Leader Publications, the company that owns both papers, will award two athletes an Athlete of the Year Scholarship.
Each week, athletic directors from the six area schools will nominate players for the Athlete of the Week. Niles, Brandywine and Buchanan will nominate players to the Daily Star. Dowagiac, Edwardsburg and Cass will nominated players to the Daily News.
The sports editors of the respective papers will then select a boys' and girls' winner for each week. Each senior winner will be eligible to apply for the scholarship at the end of the school year. Each week's winners will also receive a three-month subscription to the newspaper that selected them.
In April, each Athlete of the Week will submit an application for the scholarship. Leader Publications will then select a boys' and girls' Athlete of the Year from the Daily Star's schools and the Daily News' schools.
Two athletes will receive a scholarship for an as yet undetermined amount.
The winners will be named in May.
Senior winners from all three high school sports seasons, will be eligible for the scholarship.
Leader Publications will publish an Athletes of the Year special tabloid section in May, highlights all the year's winners.
