NILES - The Niles Township Board of Trustees voted unanimously to offer its fire chief's job to Gary Brovold, a move that was met with a standing ovation from the about 25 firefighters attending Monday night's meeting.
Brovold has been serving as the township's interim chief for a number of months.
Brovold is expected to become the fire department's permanent leader after he negotiates a compensation package with township officials.
He and two others interviewed for the chief's job.
Several trustees agreed, each candidate possessed strengths, but Brovold was the strongest of the group.
However, Brovold earned the job, said Bill Myers, township supervisor.
Brovold thanked the board and members of the association of firefighters for their "support and opportunity to serve the community."
