CASSOPOLIS - "Radio Gals" promises to put a smile on your face and let you look back to the time when things moved slower, and life was simpler.
The latest performance at the Barn Swallow Theatre on Hospital Road in Cassopolis, being shown the next two weekends, stemmed from an actual incident.
In the early days of broadcasting in the 1920s, when amateur radio station operators worked out of their homes, "wavejumping" was popular, as they searched for radio space.
The book, music and lyrics come from Mike Carver and Mark Hardwick. The setting they chose is the parlor of Hazel Hunt in Cedar Ridge, Ark.
Hazel, played by Janet Pietrzak from Edwardsburg, and her Hazelnuts sing and talk their way into local homes with down home humor on radio station WGAL.
Their commercial for their own brand of tonic "Horehound Compound," which promises a sure cure for everything, leads an inspector for the Department of Commerce to question their broadcasting procedures and marketing.
The delightful harmonizing of the Hazelnuts and the show's surprise ending will offer an enjoyable evening. The play is directed by Pam Boepple.
Shows at 24010 Hospital Rd. are on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 13-14 and 20-21, at 8 p.m. and on Sunday, Aug. 15 and 22, at 6 p.m. For information or ticket reservations at $12, call Marj at 269-445-9016.
