NILES -- Niles Michigan State Police are investigating a fatal head-on crash that took place on Friday on US-12 west of Fir Road in Milton Township.
The accident occurred when a Ford Escort travelling west attempted to pass a semi truck and collided head on into a Jeep Cherokee travelling east bound.
The driver of the Escort, Matthew Moore, 17, of Buchanan, was pronounced dead at Saint Joseph Medical Center in South Bend, Ind.
The driver of the Jeep, Gene Smith, 55, of New Carlisle, Ind., was listed in serious condition with multiple fractures at South Bend Memorial Hospital.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts.
The Michigan State Police were assisted on the scene by Cass County Sheriff's Department, Edwardsburg Fire/Rescue and SMCAS.
